...I gauge where the student is at in knowing the concepts by having him/her work out the problems. Every problem has two parts: the first is recognizing what kind of problem it is (e.g. quadratic equation) and the second is the mechanics of working it out (e.g. arithmetic skills, factoring, quadratic formula). I have been tutoring since I was in high school myself. I keep it simple and fun!

...I was a teaching assistant in an introductory engineering class. I have also done a course in cadet teaching in which I taught math to 5th graders. I believe there is more than one way to explain math concepts so that if a student doesn't grasp the way it is presented in class, I can find an alternate way of explaining it.
