...Do we know sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1? It is too basic to apply directly to the problem. Then we need to know how to change or convert the basic formulas to something like cos2x = 2cos^2(x) - 1 or 2cos^2(x) = cos(2x) + 1.
