...My approach is as follows. Before the first lesson, I request that the student submit a writing sample (a 500-word essay describing his or her favorite movie, and why it is his or her favorite). I then determine the areas that need attention. I concentrate first on grammar and punctuation; once those areas are mastered I concentrate on style.
