...I gauge where the student is at in knowing the concepts by having him/her work out the problems. Every problem has two parts: the first is recognizing what kind of problem it is (e.g. quadratic equation) and the second is the mechanics of working it out (e.g. arithmetic skills, factoring, quadratic formula).
