...I am equally focusing on the student's handling of ordinary numbers when it comes to adding, subtracting, etc. This is important because part of my tutoring of this subject is to instill a "feeling" of numbers and how they work. When this becomes comfortable with the student, then "letters" become as natural a 1,2 and 3.
