...I do not think it's helpful to simply have students memorize formulas with a "paint by numbers" approach. I truly believe it's best to understand the "why" of how to complete a problem. Not only does it give them more of a foundation for any future math education, it teaches them how to problem solve on their own so that eventually, they don't depend on a tutor to learn tougher concepts.
