Everything that you do in mathematics has a reason and has a purpose, and the best way to avoid having to memorize countless details is to know ahead of time what exactly is the purpose in your specific case. Other times, it may be helpful to memorize a specific diagram and use it to deduce a lot of useful information without having to memorize all of it.
