...Trig functions are ratios; e.g. tangent = opposite/adjacent, and the adjacent could be zero (at 90 degrees). Matrices are solved using Cramer's Rule in which we divide by the determinant which may be zero. All these things we defer to a second course in Algebra because of the zeroes in the denominator. We may say then that Algebra 2 is the study of ratios.
