Students are much better served learning strategies on how to approach sentence completions via a process of elimination, coupled with tips on how to identify words they do not know.

...Consonant sequences, like 'ph', 'th', and 'sh' all carry a specific sound. Once a vowel sequence is recognized as such, then reading capability increases exponentially. I have used phonics to teach reading to both my boys, whom I home-school, with enormous success.
