...It could be because they've experienced a lot of failure, or because they've had a teacher who didn't care about them, or a teacher who has made them feel nervous or frightened, or because of the problems with Common Core. They can often get so discouraged they see no point in even trying any more, and just give up. Those are the kinds of situations that I am best at correcting.
