...One method that was very helpful was to look at the parts of a word, roots and vowels, and look for common patterns and the sounds they made. I found a children might be able to read most of a word but have trouble with one syllable. We would look at the word for the sounds of the vowels within that syllable, see if it followed any rules, patterns, or was irregular, and then sound it out.

...I student taught in a third grade partial inclusion special education room this past spring and we worked on a lot of phonics. We practiced a lot of high frequency words that are hard to sound out and we worked on real words which we can easily sound out. Before we can sound out words we must focus on the sounds letters make individually and when they are grouped together.
