...I find that the most detrimental thing to a mathematics student is lacking a core foundation. In math, everything you learn builds on top of what you learned in previous years, and without that strong foundation, students can fall behind. When teachers explain something in class they assume that the students have a certain knowledge about math based on what they learned in previous years.
