...Think of it as steps: One must master addition to understand subtraction or master vocabulary to understand context. If a student does not understand one of the steps (or becomes "stuck"), it is difficult to continue to move forward. And as is often the case, this student gets lost, frustrated, and gives up - describing the whole scenario as being "bad" at that particular subject.
