Let w = the width of the lot

Then w + 8 = the length of the lot

Area = Length × Width

(w)(w + 8) = 2900

w^2 + 8w = 2900

w^2 + 8w - 2900 = 0

Use the quadratic formula:

w = [-8 ± sqrt(8^2 - 4(1)(-2900))]/[(2)(1)]

w = [-8 ± sqrt(11664)]/2

w = [-8 ± 108]/2

w = 50 or w = -58

Lengths are always positive, so we ignore the negative root.

width = 50

length = w + 8 = 58

The lot is 50 feet by 58 feet.
